How can I cover an old exposed aggregate patio?

Old exposed aggregate slabs can be given a new finish by covering them with patio tiles made from PU-bound rubber granules.

Where the exposed aggregate slabs are stable and level, the new patio tiles can be installed directly over them. The existing slabs do not need to be removed or supplemented with an additional sub-base.

The elastic patio tiles bridge the fine pebble texture of exposed aggregate paving as well as isolated spalled areas. Depending on tile thickness and the loads expected afterwards, they can also bridge localised defects of up to about 3 cm.

Before installation, check that every exposed aggregate slab is stable. If the bedding layer of sand or grit has been washed out over time, slabs may become hollow-sounding, rock or develop differences in level.

Slabs that are not stable must be lifted and re-laid level on a topped-up or renewed bedding layer.
