When are rubber tiles or a rubber floor bonded?

Rubber tiles made from bonded rubber granulate are normally laid loose and held together by a puzzle interlock or connectors. Bonding is appropriate where individual tiles are not sufficiently restrained against movement, lifting or unauthorised removal.

Threshold ramps are bonded to a suitable substrate. On stairs, the step covering is bonded to the existing steps. Vehicle-impact protection or ram protection is bonded to walls or pillars in garages, car parks and work areas used by forklift trucks. Permanently flexible PU adhesive is suitable for bonding this protection. Where the fixing must remain easy to remove later, high-strength carpet tape may be used instead, depending on the substrate and the level of use.

Small cut pieces and unsecured edge pieces are edge-bonded to adjoining tiles. Localised bonding may be required in small areas, at raised corners of tiles with a concealed puzzle interlock, or where there is an increased risk of movement. In public areas, localised bonding makes it more difficult to lift or remove individual tiles.
