What balcony flooring is suitable for outdoor use?
Rubber flooring for a balcony should be weather-resistant, frost-proof and water-permeable. Balcony tiles made from rubber granules meet these requirements: they are weather-resistant, frost-proof and water-permeable, with a slip-resistant, elastic surface that is pleasant under bare feet.
For balcony coverings, wood, artificial turf, ceramic and natural stone can also be used. Wood requires regular maintenance, while artificial turf requires a great deal of cleaning. Ceramic and natural stone are durable materials, although their installation is more involved. Where water enters a poorly constructed installation, frost can damage rigid tiles, joints and adhesive bonds.
Balcony tiles made from rubber granules are not damaged by frost. Rainwater and meltwater pass through the full surface of the porous tiles, then flow through drainage channels on the underside and follow the fall towards the outlet. The elasticity of rubber tiles prevents frost damage such as lifting, bursting and cracking. Their water permeability has the same effect.
Rubber tiles are laid loose on the existing substrate and, depending on the system, joined using interlocking puzzle joints or plug-in connectors. The substrate must be load-bearing and sufficiently level, the waterproofing must be intact, and a fall towards the outlet must be present.
At thicknesses of 1.8 cm and above, the tiles are shock-absorbing and reduce the transmission of footfall noise. They are easy to clean, available in many colours, and can be lifted or individually replaced when required.
